The University of Illinois Asian American Alumni Network (AAAN) is about pride, friendship, connections and service. Since officially affiliating with the broader University of Illinois Alumni Association in 2005 and launching the Network in 2006, AAAN has already grown to over 300 members worldwide and has opened satellite chapters in multiple cities in the U.S., including San Diego, SF Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington D.C. Among other activities in 2006, AAAN hosted and co-sponsored business networking events and partnered with the Urbana-Champaign campus to involve alumni in its student mentorship program.
The mission of AAAN is to strive for the betterment of the University of Illinois as an agency for education, public service, and social progress and to provide a space where interested Asian American alumni can contribute to and become involved with the University of Illinois, other alumni, and the broader Asian American community.
We look forward to helping you stay connected to and involved with your alma mater, fellow graduates, new students, and broader communities.

The National Asian American Student Conference (NAASCon) is eager to present their campaign, Hey Asian America, What's Goin' On?, in hopes of gaining more insight to Asian Americans' experiences across the nation. Through your stories, we want to connect students throughout various regions and discover the state of Asian America today. NAASCon's campaigns such as boycotting Abercrombie & Fitch for their racist apparel to protesting Details Magazine for their stereotypical portrayal of Asian men are some of many that NAASCon has coordinated in the past. As a national organization, we want to effectively distribute resources and information that would allow us to better recognize movements occurring outside of our respective campuses and communities. Reaching out beyond one's own bubble can be a fairly difficult task if you are not connected to certain groups, organizations, etc. and it can become quite easy to stay isolated within one's own campus, community, region, etc. We realize the power in learning about each others' stories and how much we have to offer each other through these experiences. This is where you, the students, come in. DEADLINE: March 1st, 2008
LENGTH: 500 - 700 words EMAIL SUBMISSIONS to naascon.news@gmail.comPlease see Campaign_prompt-2.pdf and campaign_press_release-1.pdf for more information. Email naascon.news@gmail.com with any questions!

UIC - The Push for Asian American Studies: 1991-Present
The Push for Asian American Studies at UIC: 1991 - present Students have been at the helm of leadership in terms of pushing for resources for Asian Americans on campus. Through their efforts, the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Asian Americans was approved in 1999, Asian American Awareness Month became an annual campus event starting in 2001, and the AARCC was established and opened in 2005.
Throughout the past fifteen years, however, students have been advocating also for the establishment of an Asian American Studies program. In addition to meeting regularly with administration and departments to voice their needs and even assist with inviting a few adjunct and visiting faculty to teach courses, students organized rallies in 1991, 2000, and 2006 to express demand for Asian American Studies at UIC.
Currently, there is still no academic program on campus. There are only two tenure-track faculty who were hired in 2002 to teach Asian American Studies: Mark Chiang (English Dept) and Helen Jun (English and African American Studies Depts). Plans to conduct a search for an additional Asian Americanist faculty member in the History Department were delayed due to a hiring freeze set immediately after their hires in 2002. Though there are a few other faculty at UIC who have expertise in Asian American research, they do not constitute enough faculty and courses on campus to form a Minor in Asian American Studies.
In March of 2005, the Asian American Coalition Committee put together a proposal for Asian American Studies (AACC Proposal). This proposal was submitted to the campus administration at a landmark meeting that brought together students representing a range of Asian American student organizations, the Provost, Vice Provosts, the Deans of the Liberal Arts and Sciences, Education, Architecture and the Arts, and Graduate Colleges, as well as the Department heads from Humanities and Social Sciences in LAS. The response to the students was overwhelmingly positive at that meeting.
Although the Provost charged LAS with moving forward to start Asian American studies at this March 2005 meeting, no further official institutional commitment seemed to follow in fall of 2005. Therefore, AACC organized the Speak Out in March 2006 and again met with the Provost in April to seek a response (read more on the Speak Out). Despite a galvanizing turnout for the Speak Out, by end of the summer, students, staff, faculty, and community members were still waiting for steps to be implemented toward developing Asian American Studies at UIC.
This fall of 2006, the good news is that LAS has announced a search for an assistant professor in a social science field or in history. The job announcement has been approved. This represents one significant step forward toward expanding Asian American studies. Labels: Announcements

Are You Interested in Mentoring an Asian American Student? Asian American undergraduate students at UIUC are eagerly hoping to connect with someone like you, someone with life experience and who is willing to share their experiences with them. As an alum of U of I, you can offer invaluable support, encouragement, and advice about career choices, family relationships, college life, and ethnic identity.
The Asian American Mentoring Program is jointly sponsored by Asian American Cultural Center, the Counseling Center, and the University of Illinois Asian American Alumni Network. The program matches Asian American faculty, staff, graduate students, and alumni with current UIUC undergraduate students based on students' expressed interests. The Mentoring Program will offer support for your mentoring relationship and will host events throughout the year to allow you and your protégé a chance to get to know each other and other mentors and protégés. Even if you are no longer in the Champaign-Urbana area, you can still be a valuable resource to students.
BE A MENTOR! You can make a positive impact on the life of an Asian American student. To apply to be a mentor, visit our website at http://www.odos.uiuc.edu/aacc/programs/mentorProgram/mentorApplication.asp. The application will take no more than 5 minutes to complete. If you have any questions concerning the Mentoring Program, please contact Anne Saw.
Midwest Asian American Students Union (MAASU) Conference Donations The Midwest Asian American Students Union (MAASU) was started in response to a need for political unity among Asian American students in the Midwest. By 1990, there were more than 20 universities in the Midwest that had formed APA organizations. Some had been around for years; some were in their infancy. Students felt there needed to be an organization that would support the growth of these organizations and organize APA students in the Midwest for political activism. There is an opportunity to support MAASU and its upcoming Annual Conference in March 2007 at UIUC. Attendance is expected to be around 700. In order for the betterment of the Asian community, there is effort to make the conference affordable to increase attendance. If you are interested in donating or have any questions, please contact maasu.fundraisingsponsorship@gmail.com. MAASU Mission and Objectives are below. More information can be found at http://www.maasu.org/. Mission The Midwest Asian American Students Union strives to recognize the needs of the Asian Pacific Islanders American (APIA) Community.
Objectives
- To assist schools with the establishment of APIA student organizations, APIA cultural center and/or an Asian American Studies Program
- To promote leadership among APIA students through programs including, but not limited to the Leadership Retreat, Spring Conference and other various programming.
- To address the educational needs and rights of the APIA community and provide scholarship information for all APIA students
- To develop and maintain a channel of communication for APIA student organizations in the Midwest through e-mails, bi-weekly newsletter and networking
- To assist and encourage all APIA students to work toward social change, by providing a forum for social consciousness
- To unite all communities and strengthen the APIA community's stance against all forms of oppression

As a graduate of the University of Illinois (UI), you have a lot to be proud of, old friends to reconnect with, new friends to make, and opportunities to stay involved with your alma mater, fellow alumni, current students and broader communities. The Asian American Alumni Network (AAAN) was created by Asian American alumni who recognized the need to create an organization just for you. In 2005, the AAAN became an official affiliate organization of the greater University of Illinois Alumni Association (UIAA). Since then, the AAAN Board has worked hard to launch the organization. We are pleased to announce that we are now ready to invite you to become an AAAN member!
Our MissionThe AAAN strives for the betterment of the UI as an agency for education, public service, and social progress, and seeks to provide a space where interested Asian American alumni can contribute to and become involved with the UI, other alumni, and the larger Asian American community. Benefits of Joining AAANMembership is free and open to alumni of all ages, graduation dates, geographic locations, and from any of the three UI campuses – Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Chicago (UIC), or Springfield (UIS). AAAN in 2006
Dear Friends and Colleagues, 2006 will be an exciting year for the University of Illinois Asian American Alumni Network (AAAN). Over the past four months, the AAAN Board has worked hard to clarify our mission, define objectives, and establish internal resourcing. We are excited to move ahead with you to ensure the AAAN becomes a vibrant and successful organization for its members and our community. On Sunday, February 12, 2006 the AAAN Board met to discuss our goals for the coming year and how the AAAN can best meet those goals. In particular we addressed leadership, membership, recruiting, and organizing AAAN’s kick-off event. We are pleased to share the following updates with you:
Please join the Board in welcoming Paula Kim as the new President of the AAAN. Paula Kim is a 2001 graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and is currently an attorney in Chicago, Illinois. During her time at UIUC, it was her privilege to be involved with a number of Asian American student organizations, and she will bring that same levelof commitment and excitement here. We would like to thank Betty Jang, the outgoing President, for her hard work and dedication.
You will see a major membership initiative in April, and a kick-off event in June. Additionally, as many of you have expressed interest in becoming involved with the AAAN, you will have the opportunity to do so as a Board or committee member. Please watch for more information soon.
We would like to thank the University of Illinois Alumni Association (UIAA) for its continuous support of the AAAN. Most importantly, we would like to thank all the interested persons who have patiently waited for the AAAN to get on its feet. Your support and involvement is invaluable, and with these the AAAN will surely become a rich resource for its members, and a voice for the University of Illinois Asian American alumni and student communities.
