International Alumni Award: Dr. Byung-Ho Chung

2014 Madhuri and Jagdish N. Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement

Dr. Byung-Ho Chung, MA ’83 LAS, PHD ’92 LAS, founding director of the Institute for Globalization and Multicultural Studies at Hanyang University in Ansan City, South Korea, earned a master’s degree and doctorate in anthropology from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois in 1983 and 1992, respectively. Established in 2000, the Madhuri and Jagdish N. Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement is awarded annually to a distinguished international alumnus or alumna who has helped better his or her own nation or the world through contributions to government, humanity, science, art or human welfare.

Dr. Chung, a native of South Korea, is being honored for his work in social activism and education reform extending throughout East Asia. The founder or co-founder of six civil social justice organizations, he has focused particularly on the relationship between North and South Korea, promoting multiculturalism and peace, as well as establishing organizations to care for refugees, many of whom are children. His leadership at Hanyang University and his anthropological research have inspired students and community leaders in efforts for social reform.

Illinois Alumni magazine featured Dr. Chung in its January/February 2007 issue. To view the story, visit the Illinois Alumni magazine archives
